NOTEABLE READ: Drake Covers Complex Mag & Offers Insight into His Day to Day Life

with 2 comments

Drake isn’t happy. Not in an existential way or anything. He’s not upset about the direction his life is heading, or about the subliminal potshots rappers keep sending his way. Nah, he’s unhappy with how his photo shoot for this magazine is going down. Which is surprising because it’s a bright, unseasonably warm October afternoon in downtown Toronto, and things were going so well.

We’re perched on the roof of the posh Thompson Hotel where Drizzy’s being photographed overlooking his city like a feudal lord surveying his kingdom. To his left are cranes modernizing the largest city in Canada. To his right is the Rogers Centre, the convertible stadium seen in his “Headlines” video.

Suddenly Drake tells the photographer to stop and calls for his manager, Oliver El Khatib, 25, co-captain of the creative team October’s Very Own. Canceling a cover shoot at this stage would be a serious waste of time and money, but Drake doesn’t give a fuck. He wants things done his way or not at all.

Drake doesn’t want to keep shooting with this photographer. He’d rather get Hyghly Alleyne & Lamar Taylor—the same young Toronto dudes who shot the “Headlines” video—to finish the job. Never mind the fact that the first photographer is also a young cat from Toronto who’d been…

NOTEABLE READ: Rakim Interview w/ Complex

with 2 comments

“Thinking of  master plan” Rakim is nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. A true living legend of Hip Hop who continues to inspire and be inspired by others. #salute

What have you been up to?

Just doing some shows. I just came from overseas a couple weeks ago. [I spent] a couple months over there. I haven’t been over there in 15 years. Just trying to stay focused. I’m about to start on another album.

I’ve got a few tracks and I’m working with some real important people on this one. I’m looking for some real good production. I’m trying to keep it on the low because I don’t think they really gonna expect some of the people that I’m working with. Hopefully, I’ll have…

NOTEABLE READ: Emile speaks records w/ Kid Cudi

leave a comment »

Seems like yesterday these two were unstoppable. With an abrupt end to their relationship, Emile continued on his path as did Kid Cudi. The run they had delivered some magical records; which Emile discusses with Complex.

Emile: I found Cudi browsing MySpace one day. He had ‘Day ‘n’ Nite’ on his MySpace and it had like, a few hundred listens. And I’m like, ‘Who the fuck is this? This song is a smash. This dude is incredible and he doesn’t sound like anything I’ve ever heard. And I’m looking at his Top 8 friends, and I see Plain Pat. So I call Pat, and I’m like, ‘There’s this fucking guy, he has this amazing song, and you’re in his friends.’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah, he’s this new guy I got, I think I’m gonna manage him. That’s my dude, we’re just starting out. You should produce some shit for him. The first song we ever did was…

NEW VIDEO: Clearing samples made easy…

leave a comment »

For those in the industry who constantly use samples, “LegitMix” has created software that allows for easier clearing. Major development for the games up and coming producers.

Legitmix is a new technology that seeks to solve a problem that artists—especially hip-hop artists—have been dealing with for decades. Clearing samples has been a frustrating and complicated matter, but with the rapidly evolving rules and regulations that dictate the battle over copyrighted material, it’s more relevant now than ever.

Up until now, artists have had to pay for the rights to use samples. Either that, or they face being sued for big money. Legitmix has taken an interesting approach to making this whole process easier, and producer/rapper El-P is the first to give it a shot. He’s made “Rush Over Bklyn,” which samples Rush’s “Tom Sawyer,” and he’s selling it legally…

NOTEABLE READ: Steve Stoute 1 on1 w/ Complex

leave a comment »

Steve Stoute is the man behind the scenes of most business deals involving Hip-Hop. He’s Jay-Z’s go to guy whenever advice or approval is needed. Complex, sat down with him, and picked his mind on his many involvements within the industry.

For those that don’t know, maybe you could just give a brief history about how you started working with Nas in the ’90s?

I was so inspired by Illmatic. Nas had gotten nominated at the Source Awards for Best Lyricist or something like that after Illmatic. He’d gotten in some trouble and he showed up to the event and he wanted the record company to acknowledge his nomination and get him to the event, get him to perform, and support his whole shit.

I had to go to the Queensbridge projects and ask around for Nas. I had a beige Lexus and I was just driving around just cold asking people. Some other projects had beef with Nas or his guys so when I pulled up on Jungle [and his boys], they pulled out guns on me!

But they didn’t do it. They didn’t recognize the award or the nomination. He actually showed up to the awards show with…
