Keeping up its momentum, The SOURCE Magazine follows up its Drake Power 30 cover with yet another impactful issue. In his first detailed magazine interview since his shocking seizures, Man of the Year Rick Ross opens up about his near fatal experience. “I went and seen an actual neurologist to tell me what was really going on. My condition was basically extreme exhaustion,” says the boss, “…it was a real eye-opener for me.”

NEW MAG COVER: Future Covers Fader Magazine

leave a comment »

Though Future is from Atlanta, his St. Louis show at the club Amnesia, billed as a signing party, was a homecoming of sorts. The city was the first to crown him a star, allotting radio spins for “Notice Me” off his first mixtape, 1000, released in the summer of 2010. Since 1000, Future has delivered mixtapes in an abundance that would seem altogether counterproductive if not for the amount of underground hits each has birthed. On October 30th, for a crowd in equal parts street clothes and Halloween costumes, he did his best to cover them all, jumping from the ambitious “Notice Me” to the audacious “Watch This” to the jubilant “Racks” to the riotous “Same Damn Time,” performing some songs two and three times, ultimately commanding the mic for nearly an hour.

But Future’s performance was sabotaged by either incapable speakers or faulty wiring, one of which (or both) caused the sound to drop out sporadically, sound that was already distorted by the harrowing dog whistle of microphone feedback. For all this disruption though, Future remained cool, doing his very best to…

NEW MAG COVER: 50 CeNt Covers Dec/Jan XXL Magazine

with one comment

In the cover story, 50 analyzes the current music climate: “I don’t see what I fell in love with,” he says. “So now I gotta make music that reflects what N.W.A made. I have to make music that has the moments that Nas had. I have to make music that has what Biggie offered.” He also discusses his currently untitled fifth solo album: “For me, I’m still up against what I’ve done,” he says. “So in order to top it, I know it’s a difficult task. You know, I see the bloggers. My audience hasn’t grown with me. They keep saying, “Aw, man, I want the old 50!” ’Cause those people, it would take them on a safari. I was…

NOTEABLE READ: Drake Covers Complex Mag & Offers Insight into His Day to Day Life

with 2 comments

Drake isn’t happy. Not in an existential way or anything. He’s not upset about the direction his life is heading, or about the subliminal potshots rappers keep sending his way. Nah, he’s unhappy with how his photo shoot for this magazine is going down. Which is surprising because it’s a bright, unseasonably warm October afternoon in downtown Toronto, and things were going so well.

We’re perched on the roof of the posh Thompson Hotel where Drizzy’s being photographed overlooking his city like a feudal lord surveying his kingdom. To his left are cranes modernizing the largest city in Canada. To his right is the Rogers Centre, the convertible stadium seen in his “Headlines” video.

Suddenly Drake tells the photographer to stop and calls for his manager, Oliver El Khatib, 25, co-captain of the creative team October’s Very Own. Canceling a cover shoot at this stage would be a serious waste of time and money, but Drake doesn’t give a fuck. He wants things done his way or not at all.

Drake doesn’t want to keep shooting with this photographer. He’d rather get Hyghly Alleyne & Lamar Taylor—the same young Toronto dudes who shot the “Headlines” video—to finish the job. Never mind the fact that the first photographer is also a young cat from Toronto who’d been…

NEW MAG COVER: 50 Cent, JET Magazine

leave a comment »

Ok Fif, let’s hear what you have to say. Hope it’s genuine because looking from the sidelines you have a ways to go before you compete in Hip-Hop again.

“A lot of books that I’ve read are on business and philosophy, like The 48 Laws of Power and the Art Of Seduction. I read those books because I got interested in robbing people,” he says of these renowned works on strategy. Luckily, the books offer transferable skills, which he took to every negotiation. “I paid attention to the possibilities of the deal,” he states. “Instinctively, I wanted the most options in the deal. How would I know? You pay attention to winning.”

“It levels out because when you have an aura around you, people kind of understand that they shouldn’t play with you,” he shares. “They skip the little games they would play with others,” he adds.

“Even someone under the hardest circumstances will tell you they can free themselves through reading,” he tells JET. “So no matter what’s going on, you have other options.”

NEW MAG COVER: Nasty Nas… 20 years of Hip-Hop

with 2 comments

Nas lays down some knowledge and the state of Hip-Hop as he celebrates 20 years in the game. The interviewer, you asked? is none other than Tyler, The Creator, how’s that! October 25th newsstands everywhere.

“Are you, like—this question might catch you off guard, but I ask myself this—like, when you wake up, like, are you happy,” Tyler asked. “Like, are you satisfied how everything turned out?”

“Dawg, I was naming my album Life Is Good because of how happy I am about how happy things have turned out,” Nas answered. “Sometimes I may wake up and wish my kids were living with me. That’s the only thing, you know what I mean? Our loved ones that are not around no more, like my mom. That’s the only thing. But other than that, everything is great, even when I’m alone. Even when there’s no one around.”
