BN: Maya Angelou Not Pleased w/ Common

leave a comment »

It might be the most uncommon hip-hop beef ever.

Legendary poet Maya Angelou told The Post she’s horrified that one of her biggest fans, the rapper Common, put her on a song peppered with the “N” word — which she abhors.

The song “The Dreamer,” off the album “The Dreamer, The Believer,” features a poem that Angelou penned and recited at the rapper’s request. It urges people to follow their dreams, with such lines as “From Africa they lay in the bilge of slave ships / And stood half naked on auction blocks /. . . and still they dreamed.”

Common’s lyrics, however, include such lines as “Told my n—a [Kanye West] I’m ’bout to win the Grammys now” and the boast “N—as with no heart, I’m the pacemaker.”

The Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet was petrified when she heard the lyrics.

“I had no idea that Common was using the piece we had done together on [a track] in which he also used the ‘N’ word numerous times,” Angelou said…

NOTEABLE READ: Hov Speaks on Grammy’s

leave a comment »

Grammys are nice, but for Jay-Z, it has always been about respect.

Despite winning a golden gramophone in 1999 for his Vol. 2 … Hard Knock Life LP, Hov boycotted the show after the committee failed to nominate DMX that same year. “I didn’t think they gave the rightful respect to hip-hop,” Jay told MTV News back in 2002.

Jigga has, of course, been nominated and won numerous times since, including a Best Rap Album nomination for his and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne album. Jay’s Roc Nation signee J. Cole also picked up a Best New Artist nom, and though the statues won’t be handed out until February, the God MC believes Cole is already a winner.

“I think it’s great for him, because I’m sure it’s a dream of his. We grew up seeing Michael Jackson, and I’m sure he grew up seeing whatever moment stuck in his mind, so I know it’s great for him to do that,” Hov told MTV News following a press conference announcing a pair of charitable shows at Carnegie Hall in New York. “I think he’s already won Best New Artist, to me. His journey is what I’m really excited about.”

Cole first broke out in 2009 after releasing The Warm Up mixtape online. Unlike most rap up-and-comers these days, Cole was actually signed before his breakout tape was released. After hearing his coming-of-age love story “Lights Please,” Jay signed the young rapper/producer to his Roc Nation label. Rather than commandeer the youngster’s project, Jigga let Cole find his own voice. Many, including Cole, expected his debut album to come out in 2010, but it didn’t — maybe for the best. When Cole World: The Sideline Story did drop in September, it sold more than 218,000 copies in its first week, hit #1 on the Billboard albums chart and is now certified gold…

BN: Jay-Z Hints Towards Another -Throne Album-

leave a comment »

NEW YORK — Are you ready to Watch the Throne again? With Jay-Z and Kanye West still riding high off the success of their summer masterpiece, the duo just may get back in the studio and give fans another dose, Hov revealed to MTV News.

“It depends on how this thing finishes up,” Jay said in reference to his and Kanye’s current Watch the Throne Tour. “We — I say ‘we’ because I’m in Throne mode — we’re in a great place creatively. You might see a Jay, then Kanye and a Throne album next year. You know, we’re really in a great place creatively. We really found our zone.”

Back in July, during an intimate listening session for the then-unreleased WTT, Jay revealed to a room of reporters that he had two songs already recorded for his yet-untitled 11th solo album but hasn’t talked about it very much since.

It’s been two years since Jigga dropped…

NOTEABLE READ: Fred Hampton Jr. Responds to Jay-Z Lyrics In -Murder Of Excellence-

with 3 comments

“I arrived the same day Fred Hampton died.”

The above line is said by Jay-Z on the song “Murder To Excellence” off Watch The Throne.  The line is meant to pay homage to the fallen leader of the Black Panther Party who was killed on December 4, 1969 when Chicago police and FBI agents stormed into his apartment and opened fire on a sleeping Fred Hampton.  Jay-Z was born on the exact same day, leading Jay to make the statement above on Watch The Throne, alluding to how he was given life on the same day it was taken from Hampton, as the line ends “real n***as just multiply.”

During a film screening of “The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975” and panel at University of Chicago on Saturday, Fred Hampton Jr. shared his feelings on the song lyric and Jay-Z.  Speaking to a crowd at the University’s International House, Hampton voiced his displeasure with the lyric, saying that Jay-Z has twisted that truth.  “Fred Hampton didn’t die,” Hampton Jr. said.  “He was assassinated.  Saying Fred Hampton died is like…
